LIHUE — Waimea’s Kawena Warren and Henry Delos Reyes secured state qualifying standards during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation qualifying track meet No. 4 Thursday at Vidinha Stadium.
Warren also added a pair of consideration standard performances, joined by a total of 17 other student-athletes who pegged consideration standards.
“I was going to try for personal records,” Warren, who had just returned from a trip to Colorado, said. “But I didn’t feel that strong, so I figured I would just run today.”
Warren’s first finish in the girls 110 meter hurdles stopped the clock at 16.21 seconds, her best run over the four meets, and puts her ahead of the 2013 state standard of 16.64. Her performances in the 110 hurdles has been consistently better on each run after she secured a state run on her first appearance.
Her appearance in the girls 300 hurdles was a bit more dramatic for a state consideration.
Off the blocks, Kauai’s Anaiah Christensen jumped into the lead, challenged by Warren. Christensen held the lead heading into the home stretch when Warren made her move with just a hurdle remaining before the finish line resulting in the Waimea senior stopping the clock on a 50.60 run, ahead of the consideration standard of 52.24.
Natalie Nishioka of Kauai, clearly in third place heading into the home stretch, overtook her teammate Christensen (52.90) to finish second at 52.70, less than a half-second short of the consideration mark.
Warren’s final consideration came at the girls high jump where she cleared the consideration standard in a tying performance with Kapaa freshman Heather Faretta at 4-10.
Waimea’s Kaena Kaohelaulii took a consideration standard with a first finish in the girls 100 meter dash, stopping the clock at 13.18 to clear the consideration mark of 13.24. She also topped the girls 200 meter dash at 27.92, falling short of the consideration mark by less than half-second at 27.64.
Kauai’s Heidi Herr also secured a consideration run with a first finish in the girls 3,000 meter run, stopping the clock at 12:19.72, just .2 second ahead of the consideration 12:19.94.
Kauai High School’s girls 4×100 meter relay team secured its consideration mark with a first finish at 53.43, surpassing the 54.44 standard. Among those running, Bailey Hanna was the No. 2 runner.
Moeko Fukada of Island School rounded out the girls’ performances, getting a consideration leap of 32-04.25 in the girls triple jump, bettering the consideration mark of 31-07.25.
Waimea’s Destin Miguel, Island School’s Michael Miller, and Kauai’s Christian Sarmiento were the student-athletes who picked up multiple consideration marks.
Miguel picked up his times with a first finish in the boys 100 meter dash (11.37/11.44) and the boys 200 meter dash (23.42/23.64) while Miller picked up his times in the long distance runs, getting first in the boys 1,500 meter run (4:32.00/4:34.94) and the boys 3,000 meter run (9:58.41/10:11.74).
Hot on Miller’s heels, Kapaa’s Micah Kamuela Nobriga-Ferris, a leader during the KIF cross country season, finished second in both events.
Following Miguel in the Boys 100 meter dash, Lopaka Ventura also earned a consideration standard on his 11.43 run over the consideration 11.44 mark.
Sarmiento picked up his consideration marks with a first and second finish, taking the boys long jump (20-01.50/19-08) and being relegated to the No. 2 spot in the boys triple jump (40-02.50/38-11.25) by Waimea’s Henry Delos Reyes (41-05.25) who earned a state standard (41-02.50). He rounded out his performance with a consideration tie in the boys high jump (5-8/5-08) with Kapaa’s Junard Mata.
Island School’s Emanuel Zafridies topped the boys 400 meter dash (54.33/54.34), getting consideration by a breath, while Kauai’s Charles Samuel controlled the boys 800 meter run on a 2:07.31/2:11.44) run.
The Waimea Boys 4×100 Relay team rounded out the consideration marks with a first finish 44.80 over the consideration 46.24 mark, falling short of the qualifying mark of 44.04.
The KIF qualifying meet continues Thursday at Vidinha Stadium starting at 4:30 p.m.
