LIHUE — Human remains uncovered last year in Waipouli have been reburied.
Deborah Ward, information specialist with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, said the bones were reburied last month “with appropriate traditional protocols.”
“The iwi kupuna have been reinterred on the property in an area previously set aside and used for that purpose,” she wrote in an email Wednesday.
Human remains were uncovered in October at the Kauai Sands Hotel in Waipouli while workers were digging to install utility lines near the resort’s swimming pool.
Ward said five sets of iwi were disturbed during trenching in the project area.
The DLNR’s State Historic Preservation Division notified Kauai-Niihau Island Burial Council members, who were consulted on how to best take care of the iwi, according to Ward.
