LIHUE — Alcohol is a suspected factor in two recent traffic accidents on Kauai.
The first crash occurred on Sunday near the Kealia Kai subdivision. According to a preliminary investigation, a white pickup truck was heading south about 4 p.m. in the northbound lane of Kuhio Highway when it crashed head-on with a northbound gray sedan carrying a family of four.
The sedan was then rear-ended by a silver pickup.
Two occupants of the gray sedan were transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the silver pickup was not injured.
The crash caused the white pickup to flip onto its side, pinning the driver inside. The Lihue man was initially transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital before being flown to Queen’s Hospital on Oahau where he remains in stable condition. While the crash remains under investigation, the driver of the white pickup is suspected of being under the influence of an intoxicant at the time of the crash, according to a press release.
The 48-year-old has not yet been cited because he was transported off island for medical treatment.
The second crash occurred Monday in Koloa about 2 p.m. According to police, a Dodge pickup truck was heading south on Koloa Road, near the Piko Road junction, when it reportedly crossed the center line and struck an oncoming Nissan sedan.
The driver and passenger of the sedan were transported to Wilcox with non-life threatening injuries.
The 17-year-old male operator of the Dodge pickup did not report any injuries and was detained on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and underage drinking. An investigation continues.
