PUHI — Joi Labok of the Clayworks at Kilohana said the Souper Sunday event was right on target.
“People still have the remainder of the week to come and pick up soup bowls,” said Susan Pittman. “There won’t be any soup, though. Right now, we’re almost at 100 bowls ordered. With the other bowls going out throughout the week, it looks like we’ll make our target.”
The Souper Bowl Sunday fundraiser was hosted by the Clayworks at Kilohana and Gaylord’s restaurant, whose Chef Todd Barrett and sous chef Josh Walker prepared a special soup, broccoli cheese, to go along with the handcrafted ceramic bowl.
Proceeds from the donation benefit the Lihue Lutheran Church Mobile Munchies food pantry program.
“This is the best way of helping,” said Bevin Parker-Evans, waiting while the Clayworks crew worked on her to-go order. “I came in earlier in the week to pick out my bowls. Today, we’re just taking the soup to a party. It’s nice because following the soup, they’ll have the bowls as gifts.”
Dave Turcott of Sitka, Alaska, agreed.
“We’re taking our bowls back to Alaska,” Turcott said, coming in to select an additional bowl before enjoying the specially made soup ahead of packing the bowls for the trip back to Alaska.
Pittman said Gaylord’s chef Barrett got excited.
“They still have more soup if we need,” Pittman said. “Plus, they were asking if we needed more croutons, or anything else.”
Located at 3-2087 Kaumualii Highway in the back of the Kilohana estates, Clayworks at Kilohana is open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends for those who need to pick up a soup bowl to help the Lihue Lutheran Church Mobile Munchies program.
