Sewage spill reported in Eleele

ELEELE — An overflowing manhole was reported Sunday morning at the intersection of Kaumualii Highway and Eleele Road.

Wastewater officials report that the overflow occurred for a period of roughly 20 minutes, from 7:25 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. Approximately 2,000 gallons of sewage spilled from the manhole, mixed with the storm water runoff, and then flowed down into Hanapepe Valley.

The spill occurred because the volume of water in the sewer main exceeded its capacity as a result of this morning’s heavy rains.

The state Department of Health has been notified of the incident and the county will follow the direction of the Health Department in the management of this sewage spill.
