New York visitor drowns Friday

POIPU —A 58-year-old male visitor identified as Douglas Sposato from Stoney Brook, N.Y., drowned near Lawai Beach Resort Friday, Kauai County officials said.

Sposato had been snorkeling in the area at around 2:25 p.m. when his brother noticed he was having difficulty in the water. Bystanders brought the unresponsive man to shore and performed CPR before medics took over. Sposato was transported to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Sposato is the 17th drowning victim on Kauai this year, according to a county press release.
