LIHUE — A Kapaa man died while fishing in waters off the island’s South Shore Friday afternoon.
Paul Guenther, 59, was fishing with friends roughly 8 miles off shore about 3 p.m. when, according to witnesses, he began complaining of feeling faint and collapsed a short time later.
Using the boat’s radio, friends immediately notified the U.S. Coast Guard to request assistance.
Coast Guard personnel responded and began performing CPR, but attempts to resuscitate Guenther were unsuccessful, according to a press release.
Guenther was transported to Nawiliwili Boat Harbor, where medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police also responded to the scene, but foul play is not suspected in the cause of Guenther’s death.
