LIHUE — A free coaches clinic today will open the 2013 Merv Lopes Classic basketball tournament hosted by Team Central.
The coaches clinic will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Island School gym. The first games start Thursday at Kauai High School gym and continue through the championship games Sunday.
Clarence Sales of Team Central said there are 22 boys basketball teams entered in this year’s tournament, registered in three groups.
Division 1 boys include boys 12th grade and below. Division 2 boys include boys 9th grade and under, and Division 3 boys include boys 7th grade and below.
Participating teams from Oahu include the Aiea Blazers, Dream Hoops Elite, Honolulu Sharks-Black and Honolulu Sharks-Green.
Teams participating from Maui include the Upcountry Kings-Red, Upcountry Kings-Black and the Upcountry Elite.
Kauai teams include Team Central, WBC, Team Lihue, the Kauai Ballers and Papalina.
Boys will play a total of 52 games spread out over the four days starting Thursday.
There is no admission fee for any of the games, and people can visit www.tcb808.com for complete tournament schedules.
