KAPAA — The Kawaihau Minors All-Stars baseball team leave Thursday to participate in the District 1 playoffs on Oahu.
“We play our first game Friday against the Kaneohe B team,” said Sterlyn Shimabukuro, an assistant coach, Tuesday while watching head coach Karl Kimura put the team through its paces. “If we can win the District, we come home to host the state tournament. Kawaihau is host to the Minors State Tournament this year.”
Teams in the District 1 of the Hawaii Little League include Windward Oahu and Kauai. Teams include Kahalu, Kailua American, Kainalu, Kaneohe and the Kawaihau Community.
Hawaii currently has five districts with the champions of these districts meeting in a double-elimination tournament, which decides the state championship, states the Hawaii Little League website including the 2012 state results.
The Hawaii Majors champion advances to the West Region tournament in San Bernardino, Calif. The West Region winner advances to the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pa.
To date, 11 Hawaii leagues have participated in the Little League World Series, including the Waipio Little League, which won the United States championship in 2010.
Hawaii has produced two Little League World Series champions: the West Oahu Little League in 2005 and Waipio in 2008.
