LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Police Department is supporting the statewide and national campaign for “Distracted Driving Awareness Month.”
The KPD said Tuesday it would be increasing enforcement of Hawai‘i’s distracted driving laws in an ongoing campaign. The goal is to reduce accidents.
The state Department of Transportation reports there were 3,092 traffic fatalities in the nation that involved distracted driving as a cause in 2010.
County police departments in Hawai‘i reported issuing 20,905 distracted driving citations statewide in 2012.
Kaua‘i police issued 870 citations to motorists in 2012 for using cell phones or other electronic devices while driving.
Police remind motorists that “distracted driving” is any type of activity that could divert a driver’s attention, such as talking on the phone or to other passengers, grooming, eating, or drinking while driving.
