LIHU‘E — A 56-year-old visitor was taken to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital on Friday afternoon after sustaining an injury while hiking in Koke‘e.
The Australian resident had been hiking along the Pihea Trail at approximately 3:23 p.m. She was about three-quarters of a mile in when she hurt her ankle.
Police Dispatch was notified, and within minutes Truck 7 with four fire fighters from the Waimea station was en route to Koke‘e. Air 1 with Rescue 3 aboard also responded, but was forced to return to the Lihu‘e Airport due the rain and heavy fog.
Truck 6 from the Hanapepe fire station was then dispatched to assist with the rescue. The Waimea fire fighters hiked in and were met along the way by the Hanapepe fire fighters.
After locating the injured woman, the rescuers placed her in a wheeled Stokes litter and brought her out to the trailhead. The awaiting medics transported her to the hospital.
