LIHU‘E — Fifteen Waimea High School students met with U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawai‘i, on the steps of the U.S. Capitol Wednesday morning, according a news release.
“The young leaders I met with this morning from Waimea High School are truly inspiring,” Gabbard said.
The Kaua‘i students are visiting Washington, D.C., as a part of their participation in the Close Up Foundation civic education program. Students from Kaua‘i High School are also visiting Washington, D.C., this week with the program.
Throughout her discussion with the Waimea students, Gabbard highlighted the need for young people to provide servant leadership in every part of our community.
“They have put their education first and understand the importance of servant leadership,” Gabbard said. “These students are the future leaders of our state, and I am confident their experiences and lessons learned here will help to create new opportunities for them to contribute to their communities.”
The program aims to educate, inspire and empower students by providing skills and experience needed to become active citizens. This week, the students will also visit museums, national monuments and take a tour of the U.S. Capitol.
