WAILUA — Bryden Salvador of Kapa‘a took advantage of Kaua‘i absences to lead the Warrior boys to its first win of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf Saturday at Wailua Golf Course.
With Kaua‘i’s top two boys, Pono Tokioka and Braeden Robley, off on a school excursion, Salvador fired a 77 (39-38) and Kainalu Gandia followed a stroke back (38-40-78) to lead Kapa‘a to 322, 16 strokes ahead of Kaua‘i High School which finished with 338. Island School boys posted a 418 followed by Waimea boys ending the day in the rain and wind at 446.
Daeza Tomas topped the Kaua‘i girls with an 81 (42-39) to lead the Red Raider girls to a team 276, the only girls team scoring. Taylor Viquelia, the consistent top girl shooter for Kaua‘i, was also absent, the team getting its team contribution from Hi‘ilani Alana (54-42-96) and Jenae Park (56-43-99). Randi Oxentine posted a 105 (50-55) as a Raider individualist on the girls’ field.
Mariah Paiste topped the Waimea girls with a 90 (50-40) followed by Samantha Nichols ending with a 103 (51-52). Kawena Warren, a Menehune leader, was also absent from action.
Na‘ea Oda posted a 99 (48-51) for Kapa‘a and Kari Whitworth, recovering for a nice save on the No. 9 where KIF officials were kept busy with the greens repair, finished with a 94 (48-46) for Island School.
Following Salvador and Gandia in Kapa‘a’s boys’ lead, senior Kenji Miyata finished in the No. 3 spot with an 81 (40-41) with Kawika Wellington rounding out the team scoring at 86 (39-47).
Other Warrior men on the field included Landen Ishida (48-43-91), Anthony Aiwohi (49-48-97) and Justin Donios (60-48-108).
Trevor Kua, recovering from a potentially damaging No. 9 where he exited the bunker and overshot the green, finished two-under par 34 at the crossing. Kua finished the day one-under par 71 (34-37) to lead the Kaua‘i boys’ scoring.
He was followed by Jamie Amimoto (40-43-83), Kai Adachi (48-44-92) and Keith Jose (48-44-92).
Other Red Raiders on the course included Vance Tokita (51-46-97) and Jacob Viquelia (51-49-100).
Michael Miller posted a 92 (45-47) to top the Island School boys followed by Adam Sclafani (52-48-100), Jacob Dysinger (55-46-101) and Josh Miller (62-63-125).
Tresten Nakashima fired a 99 (49-50) to lead the Waimea boys, Derek Callejo (49-53-102), Wesley Carter-Fujinaka (57-53-110) and Mark Kanahele (68-67-135) rounding out the scoring four. Tevin Vidinha-Flores rounded out the Waimea boys with a 139 (72-67).
The KIF hosts its Golf Match No. 4, Saturday at the Kaua‘i Lagoons with the first grouping tee-ing off at noon.
