LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School girls and the Kapa‘a High School boys opened the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation track season with wins Thursday at Vidinha Stadium.
With track and field athletes working to qualify for the 2013 Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state meet, Kaua‘i girls piled up 134 points, just three points ahead of Waimea’s 131 points. Kapa‘a High School girls followed with 91 points and Island School girls finished with 42 points.
On the boys’ arena, Kapa‘a boys finished with 182 points followed by Kaua‘i boys in second place at 159 points. Waimea followed with 99 points and Island School collected eight points.
The field of athletes also offered a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation record-breaking performance, three state qualifying performances and more than a handful of consideration performances.
Topping the performance list, the battle between Kaua‘i’s Kawehi Louis-Diamond and Waimea’s Kawena Warren highlighted the action as the two athletes captured state standards (based on 2012 criteria) in the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles.
Louis-Diamond captured gold, stopping the clock at 15.83, challenged by Warren crossing the line at 16.49, both state time standards.
Louis-Diamond, a senior, continued her winning ways, picking up a consideration standard in the Girls 300 Meter Hurdles with a first finish at 50.70.
McKenna Lopez-Estacio of Kaua‘i High School announced the boys in the field events, establishing a KIF meet record in the Boys Discus Throw with a fling of 152-04, bettering the existing KIF record distance of 151-10 set in 2011 by Keven Marshall Adkisson of Kapa‘a.
If Lopez-Estacio can repeat, or better this throw during the KIF Championships, he will own the new record, KIF track officials said. The only time a KIF record can be set is during the championship meet.
Lopez-Estacio’s toss, however, set him a qualifying distance, bettering the auto standard distance of 149-00. Christian Sarmiento of Kaua‘i picked up a consideration leap of 39-09.5 in his first finish in the Boys Triple Jump.
Joshua Cram of Kapa‘a, recently named Most Outstanding Player at the Outrigger Hotels & Resort state soccer championships, picked up a consideration leap in his first finish in the Boys High Jump, his leap of 5-08 equalling the consideration standard.
