HONOLULU — Kapa‘a High School got balanced scoring from its leaders, but Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy went to the long ball in its 68-36 win Thursday at the Hawaiian Airlines Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II state boys basketball championships at the Kaimuki High School gym on O‘ahu.
Playing in the 57th annual state championships, the Warriors, earning the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation title in a playoff against Kaua‘i High School, fired off three treys to HPA’s five.
Keali‘i Colipano, leading the Kapa‘a effort with eight points, fired off one of the treys along with Makana Artaho-Aki, who finished with seven points. Daniel Reis, key to the Kapa‘a championship win, was held to just one three-ball in the outing against the tournament’s No. 4 seed.
Lance Pepper-Miyashiro, normally a double-digit scorer, was held to just six points along with center Morean Clement.
James Paik added four and James Stevens finished with a pair in the effort.
Jovan Crnic led the HPA win with a game-high 15 points, including one of the five three-balls. Nicolash Palleschi added 11 points. Sefa Rocha-Tufaga launched a pair of treys for six points with Buck Thomas getting a trey toward his eight points. Kellen Gillians also marked a three-ball toward his five points.
Kapa‘a next takes the floor Friday at Kalani High School against the loser of the top seeded St. Francis and Waianae. Tip off is at 5 p.m.
