NAWILIWILI — The 19th Annual Hawai‘i Dinosaur Volleyball Tournament opened Friday with a good-sized field of players at the Kalapaki Beach fronting the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club.
Tournament director David Chaikin of Kona on the Big Island said this year’s tournament is the 19th, but only the third to be played on Kaua‘i.
“We want to be able to play the tournament on all the Islands,” Chaikin said. “We’ve played it on the Big Island and O‘ahu and one time on Maui. This is the third time we’re on Kaua‘i.”
The tournament features men and women division playing in a double elimination format.
Men play in two-person teams with the combined ages of the players being 80, while the women play in two-person teams with the combined ages of the players being 70, Chaikin said.
“A lot of the players are professionals and former pros,” Chaikin said. “We have players from all over — East Coast Canada, West Coast Canada, an Australian, one from New York, and pretty much all over.”
Players register through Facebook under Hawai‘i Dinosaur.
The public is invited to view the competition at no charge when play continues from 8 a.m. until about 5 p.m. today. The tournament ends Sunday from 8 a.m. with the championship games starting at 3 p.m. at Kalapaki Beach.
