LYDGATE – A 65-year-old New York man drowned in waters off Lydgate Beach Saturday afternoon.
Police Dispatch was notified of the potential swimmer in distress at 3:25 p.m., according to a county news release. The man had been swimming in waters off the south end of Lydgate Beach when he reportedly was swept out, the release states.
Lifeguards from the Lydgate and Kealia beach towers, along with firefighters from the Kapa‘a Station and a county park ranger responded to the scene.
Rescuers located the unresponsive body floating further south of the area where he was last seen swimming, and roughly 25 yards off shore, the release states.
Firefighters immediately began performing CPR and applied an Automated External Defibrillator but no shock was advised. Medics then continued CPR en route to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, the release states.
His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
This is the third reported ocean drowning on Kaua‘i this year.
There are currently no weather or ocean advisories in effect for the County of Kaua‘i, but according to one lifeguard on the scene, the waters were “rough.”
