LAWA‘I — A distressed kayaker was rescued after a brief but intensive search Thursday afternoon off of Lawa‘i Beach.
Kaua‘i Police Dispatch alerted responders shortly after 5 p.m. to investigate a kayaker possibly in distress about a mile and a half off Lawa‘i Beach in the Kukui‘ula boat harbor area, according to scanner chatter.
Water Safety personnel radioed that they were en route with two personnel aboard a Jet Ski. Rescue 3 and Engine 4 radioed that they were also en route.
The search also reportedly included a U.S. Coast Guard that was dispatched from Nawiliwili Harbor. In addition Kaua‘i Fire Engine 4 and Lifeguard 4 called in to respond, and two of Captain Andy’s charter boats were asked to search the area for the kayaker.
Air 1 radioed that they were en route at 5:50 p.m. to Po‘ipu. Air 1 and the Coast Guard turned back after Water Safety personnel reported spotting the kayaker at 5:49 p.m.
Soon after the responders reported they were returning with the rescued kayaker to Kukui‘ula. They reported that the kayaker was fine and that no medical assistance was needed.
