KOKE‘E — A 2011 Jeep Wrangler was consumed by fire on Koke‘e Road on Saturday morning.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:22 a.m. about 1 1/2 miles south of the Waimea Canyon Drive junction. No one was injured in the fire, according to a county news release.
The driver reported that after smelling fumes, he pulled to the side of the road.
He and his passenger then exited the vehicle. Soon afterward, the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
Kaua‘i Fire Engine 7 and Truck 7 along with police responded to the alarm. Foam, water, and a dry chemical were used sparingly to control and extinguish the vehicle fire because of the vehicle’s ruptured fuel tank and the presence of a water reactive metal.
As a safety precaution, Koke‘e Road was closed for approximately two hours and traffic was diverted to Waimea Canyon Drive.
The cause of the fire is not known.
