The Mokihana Club, the oldest women’s nonprofit organization on Kaua‘i, was started in 1905 when ladies of Kaua‘i built a gathering place, a social hall across the Kaua‘i Museum, on plantation land for $3,000.
Faced with a short fall of $1,400, the ladies organized a grand fair featuring games, food and a sale of items to help with the deficit.
People from all parts of the island flocked to the event in horse-drawn carriages and on foot to take in the unusual event filled with flower lei, a band, dinner and shopping.
This was the start of The Mokihana Club, which over the past 100 years, has grown to include more than a hundred members.
Described as a social club, the main purpose of The Mokihana Club is to provide nursing and music scholarships to graduating seniors of high school students of Kaua‘i.
