HONOLULU — The Kaua‘i United Way and other Garden Island nonprofits were among the beneficiaries of the Bank of Hawai‘i’s recent statewide Employee Giving Campaign.
BOH employees and retirees raised a record $570,913 for 24 nonprofits during this year’s campaign, which ran for five weeks from Sept. 10 to Oct. 12, according to a news release. They surpassed their goal of $525,000.
In the past three years, employees and retirees raised a total of $1,563,166 to benefit 33 local organizations.
“This campaign is special because it’s driven by our employees,” says Peter Ho, Bank of Hawai‘i chairman, president and CEO in the release.
Ho said employees and retirees choose the organizations and can allocate donations among multiple beneficiaries.
“They do an amazing job, and this year far exceeded the goal that was set,” he says. “We also had more than three dozen internal fundraisers, some of which were creative, and some that were high in calories. It was fun for the employees and a great result for the community.”

The BOH Employee Giving Campaign is just one of many community service projects the bank participates in throughout the year.
Once a week, employees across the company devote personal time to represent the company at community service events. Throughout 2012, more than 11,500 hours of sweat equity were donated to various nonprofits by employees. With donations from the bank and the Bank of Hawai‘i Foundation, BOH’s combined giving to the community this year is $2.5 million, the release states.
The bank also created the annual Bank of Hawai‘i Community Walk as a way to support nonprofit organizations that lack the resources to hold their own. The walk raised more than $158,000 this year, and since its inception in 2007, it has raised almost $900,000, according to the release.
Employees with the bank also raised money this year through their participation in the Visitor Industry Charity Walk.
