LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a’s Caleb Neumann netted two goals to lead the Warrior JV boys soccer team to a 5-0 shutout over the Kaua‘i JV squad, Thursday at Vidinha Stadium.
But the Warriors’ girls team, after scoring the first goal, could not stop Kaua‘i’s Red Scovel who netted two goals in its 2-1 edge at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation soccer games.
Playing in stiff tradewinds out of the Northeast, Neumann found the net about 20 minutes into play for the 1-0 lead which at the half.
Coming out of the break, the Warriors poured on the offense, Neumann adding his second goal of the night, joined by Max Nice, Jonah Stokes and Ezekiel Bagano finding the goal.
Defensively, Colby Sargent anchored the defense which held the Red Raiders at bay during its numerous trips into scoring positions.
Coming on the heels of the Warrior JV boys’ win, the girls got a goal from Ha‘aheo Mahinai for a 1-0 halftime lead, a similar situation with the boys.
But Kaua‘i JV came back with two second-half goals by Red Scovel, her parents and siblings watching while nestled high in Raiderland and huddled against the biting wind.
Scovel was able to pick up the breaks coming down the wing and despite the strong defensive efforts by Stephanie Cram and Kai Chase, found the net, the Warriors exchanging its goalkeeper who was shaken up on the first save attempt.
Madison Moore of the Island Schools’ girls soccer team netted a whopping five goals, Wednesday night in the Voyagers’ 8-0 win against Waimea in an exhibition match at Hanapepe Stadium.
Aiding the effort, Jade Murphy pocketed two goals and Keana Green iced the win with her score.
Kapa‘a next hosts Waimea at Vidinha Stadium, Saturday with four games on tap, the JV boys opening with a 10 a.m. kickoff followed by the JV girls at 11:45 a.m.
The varsity boys take the field starting at 1:30 p.m. followed by the varsity girls at 3:30 p.m.
Kaua‘i High School boys will regroup and travel to the Island School soccer complex for a 10 a.m. match followed by the JV girls going up against the Island School in a noon exhibition match to wrap up the first round of KIF soccer.
