LIHU‘E — Kawaikini New Century Public Charter School in Lihu‘e collected 464 pounds of non-perishable food during its 2nd Annual Food Drive in November.
School staff and students delivered the food to the Hawai‘i Foodbank’s Kaua‘i Branch Tuesday.
This year, the school’s faculty and 114 students collected more than double what was brought in last year. Each of the school’s four classrooms filled approximately seven boxes.
“We had 100 percent participation from the whole school,” Ginger Allen said. “We were definitely pleased with the outcome.”
“We always encourage the students to help others,” Director Samuel K. Ka‘auwai added. “Our children really got excited about it this year.”
Kawaikini New Century Public Charter School is a K-12 Hawaiian immersion school, which opened in August 2008. Through the medium of the Hawaiian language, Kawaikini’s mission is to create a supportive learning environment where indigenous cultural knowledge is valued, applied and perpetuated.
