LIHU‘E — The Garden Island newspaper and the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i are teaming up again this year and asking the community to help make the holidays happier for less-fortunate residents through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
From now through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size. The names have been changed to protect their privacy. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true.
Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted. Checks made payable to Zonta Club of Kaua‘i Foundation can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihu‘e, HI 96766. For more information, call Yoshiko “Dimples” Kano, chair of The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund Committee, at 822-9882.
Help give twin babies a happy holiday
Annette and her family live in a small studio as that is all they can afford at this time. She had to quit her job when she gave birth to her twins. Her husband can only find temporary employment. Their finances are so limited that they won’t even have enough money to have a nice Christmas dinner. Roy and Dannette are now eight months old and could really use some clothes and toys for Christmas. Case # GZ/H.13

Tent, sleeping bag for homeless man
Brian has been homeless for 2 months now. He and his girlfriend broke up because of his lack of work and money. He has no family and will not have any Christmas without the gift of giving. He really could use a new sleeping bag and tent. Case # GZ/H.16
Disabled man all alone
James moved here because of his disability. His doctor on the Mainland told him the warmer weather would be more desirable for his condition. The doctor was right, but James didn’t realize how much more expensive it was going to cost to live. He was living in his van for the last two years, but recently just moved into a house. The house was fully furnished, which was nice since James basically only had his tools and his car. James has no living relatives and is a loner. His Christmas wish would be to replace all his carpenter tools that were taken from his car the day before he moved into his house. Case # GZ/H.17
Man needs shoes, pillow with support
Jerry has been homeless since he moved to Kaua‘i six months ago. He thought he would be able to get a job in construction but has been unsuccessful. He actually has a lot of health problems and is taking care of that at the moment. He has lived with fallen arches all his life, but now that he is getting older the pain is hard to bear. He really could use a pair of size 11 shoes with added support. He also has a bad neck and could use a neck support pillow. Case # GZ/H.18
