“Scrooge,” the musical version of Charles Dickens’ classic tale “A Christmas Carol,” continues today with a benefit show at 4 p.m. at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e.
Presented by the Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre, performances kicked off Friday and will run weekends only through Nov. 25. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7 p.m. Sunday matinees, including today’s, begin at 4 p.m.
Producer Debra Blachowiak says the audience “can expect what they get every year” from the Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre, including live orchestral music, amazing costumes, a large cast and lots of special affects.
“We just feel like it’s going to be a wonderful show,” she said. “This is our 16th year doing a big Broadway musical.”
“Scrooge, The Musical,” like the 1970 musical film, follows the cruel and uncaring Ebenezer Scrooge as he is visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future and is taken on a magical journey of redemption that will forever change the future of Christmas in London Town.
It is perfect for those feeling a bit “humbuggish” about the commercialism of the coming holiday season, and offers messages of love and community, according to Blachowiak.
“It’s just a wonderful story,” she said.
Today’s performance serves as a special one-day-only benefit show for the Kaua‘i food banks and the Salvation Army. Tickets costs $6 if accompanied by a food or monetary donation, which should be brought directly to the theater. Benefit tickets must be purchased from the cast and crew or at the door.
Last year’s benefit show brought in over 1,000 pounds of food, according to Blachowiak. Those wishing to further support the Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre can purchase VIP tickets for all Sunday performances. VIP tickets cost $25 (or the difference in price of previously purchased tickets) and include a back-stage tour, refreshments, a souvenir and preferred seating. Those participating in the VIP Fundraiser must arrive at the theater by 3 p.m., one hour before showtime.
Regular performance tickets can be purchased in advance for $12 at Kalaheo Coffee Co., Progressive Expressions in Koloa, Times Supermarket in Lihu‘e, Papaya’s Natural Foods in Kapa‘a, Kong Lung Store in Kilauea and Harvest Market in Hanalei. Student tickets are $10 in advance.
Tickets are also available at the door and cost $15 for adults and $12 for students. Children 3 and under are free.
