LIHU‘E — Looking for a unique Christmas gift idea?
The Kaua‘i Historical Society hosts its final Vintage Book Offering and Wine and Cheese Tasting from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. today in the lobby of the newly-restored historic County Building.
“It’s going to be fabulous,” Karen Ouye of the KHS said.
Today’s event is the Historical Society’s second vintage book sale, featuring hundreds of titles being sold to benefit the organization’s library.
“It was so popular and successful (in February) that we decided we would try it one more time,” Mary Requileman, director of the society, said. “We anticipate that we won’t be able to do this again because we will hopefully sell everything.”
Requileman says the society has approximately 300 duplicate books, mostly Hawaiian, ranging in price from $5 to several thousand dollars and dating back to the early-1800s.
“These books have been in storage for years,” she said. “They’ve all been cleaned and freshened up.”
The selected offerings include books on Hawaiian mythology, place names of Hawai‘i, ‘Iniki publications, an assortment of coffee table books, a selection of signed books and other Kaua‘i Historical Society publications.
Requileman says the event is a great opportunity to purchase first editions, out-of-print titles and signed copies as Christmas gifts. Books will be separated into categories by price.
In addition to the book sale, participants are invited to enjoy a variety of wine and cheeses, as well as participate in a silent auction. Auction items include a two-night stay at the Kaua‘i Marriot Resort, helicopter rides, fine dining certificates, an ice cream party for 30, lu‘au tickets and auto detailing.
Reproductions of rare historic Kaua‘i photos will be available for sale, as well as reproductions of a 1903 map of Kaua‘i and a giclee of a Coco Palms lagoon.
Maryanne Kusaka will be selling and signing copies of her 15-page special KHS publication, “Na Wahine Kiekie” (Women of Distinction), for $5. A two volume DVD set of “Kaua‘i Backyard Music” will also be available for $25.
Members of the Kaua‘i Historical Society, with a valid membership card, will receive a 10 percent discount on all items. Proceeds from the book sale will be used to further the mission of the Kaua‘i Historical Society.
