The Waimea High School girls volleyball team is unseeded when the New City Nissan Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association, Division II state championships open Tuesday on O‘ahu.
Under the direction of coach Chad Delanoza, the Menehune girls volleyball captured the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation title with an undefeated record, although it encountered some challenges in the second round en route to the KIF championship.
Following a clean first round where the Menehune did not give up any sets, it entered Round 2 by giving up a set to Kaua‘i High School and did not clinch the title without dropping the first two sets to Kapa‘a High School in the final season game at home.
The Menehune also battled back against the Warrior wahine in the final set after giving up at least five points to open.
Waimea plays Kailua starting at 7 p.m. at Kalani High School in Honolulu Tuesday, the winner advancing to meet the Division II No. 4 seed, Kau High School.
Third seed is Seabury Hall who will be playing at the Farrington High School gym, meeting the winner of the Hawai‘i Baptist and Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy from Tuesday night.
The Farrington Lady Governors hold the No. 2 seed in Division II, playing at home against the winner of Konawaena and La Pietra from Tuesday night.
Top seed in Division II goes to St. Francis who will take on the winner of the Hana and Kaimuki match from Tuesday afternoon at Kalani.
The Division II championship match is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday at the Neal Blaisdell Center in Honolulu.
Top seed in Division I goes to Punahou with Kahuku Red Raiders getting the No. 2 seed. Kamehameha Schools-Maui gets the nod for No. 3 seed with Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i Island getting the No. 4 seed.
The championship game for Division I is scheduled for Friday starting at 6 p.m. at the Blaisdell Center.
