Support for Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho
I am a supporter of Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho. Shaylene has supported my family since December 2000 when our home was broken into. When the thief was caught and up for trial, she made sure the guy went to prison for a long time not only because of what he did to our family but what he did to many families in the area. She got us all justice!
Shaylene has also fought for people dear and close to me who were wrongly accused of a crime. She is fair, she is honest. She speaks the truth. If you don’t like what she has to say, that’s your problem. Maybe for some people the truth hurts. We need a Prosecutor who will honor values. Who will fight for what is pono. Who is not only a Prosecutor but a friend who will listen and consider your concerns. A Prosecutor that makes you feel like a valued human being. A person who will speak to you on a personal basis and makes you know in your heart she truly does care.
Kaua‘i, please I hope my story of my relationship with Shaylene and her excellent team of office workers will help you to understand how valuable her knowledge and dedication to the people of Kaua‘i is. She is a unique and genuine person. Please cast your vote for Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho for Prosecuting Attorney. Aloha Pumehana!

Albizias were not a good idea
Using albizia trees for fuel requires growing them in large forests on purpose. This leads to more invasion by albizias, not less. Some years ago, a company planted hundreds of acres of albizia trees between the tree tunnel and Oma‘o. Since then, albizias have been spreading all over the area, especially downwind. Many of these invasive albizias are difficult to harvest because they are growing next to houses, fences, electric wires, etc.
It can cost over $1,000 to remove just one of these unwanted trees. There is no way you can make up that $1,000 by burning that one tree and making electricity.
Our Oma‘o neighborhood is directly downwind from the area where they planted albizias and will be burning the trees to make electricity. So, we have been losing our views and having to spend large amounts of money to remove the trees. Soon we will be living in smoke, as well. I thought this was supposed to be the Garden Island.
Albizias may sound good, but the overall impact is negative. Maybe we should require those who grow albizias on purpose to pay for the removal of all the albizia descendants downwind. This would bring some economic reality to this situation regarding this terribly invasive species.

Aloha to our ‘Smiling Mailman’
I was blessed to know Jonathan “Jody” Alvarez mainly as the mailman who came to our business office everyday from as long as I can remember. I also knew Jody as a fellow Kekaha person who traveled to and from Lihu‘e everyday for work.
Sadly for us, Jody passed away on Oct. 7 and was buried Oct. 26.
I just wanted to express my thanks to him via the dear Lord above, for sending Jody into so many of our lives. I call him the “smiling mailman” because no matter how your day was going, when Jody brought in the mail, you just felt happy because he was always smiling. He would always joke around, too, and just make your day.
I’m sure for the many people who lived and worked in the area near Kukui Grove and Pua Loke, and whatever other areas Jody delivered mail to, he is surely missed. There are indeed, some big shoes to fill here, even though Jody was small in stature, he was big at heart. It was quite apparent to all of us that he truly loved his job! At least, that’s what he projected.
To his wife Rachel, his sons Galen and Ian and all his family — thank you for sharing Jody with all of us!
Mahalo, Jody and may our dear Lord in heaven grant you everlasting peace!

On Obama’s non-response
Lefty columnist Gene Lyons makes a gallant effort to defend Obama’s non-response to the Benghazi mission murders.
Unfortunately for Mr. Lyons, emails to the White House situation room and others, revealed by CBS, now show that the administration was alerted almost immediately.
Despite the parsing of Obama’s Rose Garden statement, it’s now clear the administration, including Obama, persisted in lying about what was clearly a planned military strike against U.S. assets and personnel. As it happened, 30 Americans were under attack for seven hours and the Obama Administration sat on its hands. The result: four dead Americans, including our ambassador to Libya. Some of the murders occurred in the final hours of the assault.
This tragedy should not have occurred. But requests for military protection prior to the attack were denied, and available assets were not deployed, as a paralyzed administration watched in real time.
At the time of this writing — 36 hours after the emails were made public — MSNBC hasn’t even bothered to mention it. Typical.
