LIHU‘E — A defendant facing felony charges in five cases was denied supervised release by two judges Tuesday in 5th Circuit Court.
Randy William Pu‘ulei, 38, of Kilauea, was seeking release prior to his sentencing after pleading no contest to charges in a global plea deal of all cases in September.
Judge Kathleen Watanabe denied a motion for supervised release in courtroom six, involving two cases of abuse of family or household member, second-degree assault and criminal contempt of court.
State Deputy Public Defender Stephanie Sato asked that Pu‘ulei’s bail be reduced in the alternative. She said the defendant had already been released to attend his mother’s funeral and returned without incident.
County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Arin said the state objected to supervised released or bail reduction.
She said the defendant has a record and committed the most recent offense while on bail.
Watanabe also denied the request for reduced bail. She said the defendant is a flight risk given the seriousness of the charges and from past activity.
Chief Judge Randal Valenciano also denied supervised release in three cases in courtroom four on Tuesday.
In these three cases, Pu‘ulei faces first-degree terroristic threat, third-degree assault, unauthorized entry into a dwelling, violating a protective order, abuse of family or household member, unauthorized entry into a dwelling and criminal contempt of court charges.
Pu‘ulei is scheduled for sentencing on Dec. 27 in Valenciano’s court.
He will be sentenced on Jan. 9, 2013 in Watanabe’s court.
