A dedicated ocean caregiver
I am writing this letter, even if my brother did not request this of me, because my heart is saddened for the people of Kaua‘i that will be affected by the loss of a good person who loves his job, has helped in saving lives and is a true ambassador for the visitor industry.
I know that people will think that my opinion — because I am his sister — would be one of prejudice, but I am just being truthful to what I know of my brother.
In life, we must all have our own journey of learning and growing, and Myles throughout life’s experiences, has been an honest, kind and loving person. He is there when you need him and will give the shirt off his back to people who need help.
You can speak with all his friends that he has made over the years from near and far about the person he is.
My brother was brought up in the town of Kekaha where we grew up on the plantation, where our grass roots were one of sharing, caring and honesty.
Each person valued no matter what or where they were from, and sharing of what little we had was a gift from the heart.
Myles, as a little boy, was connected to the ocean in every way. His days were spent with my father throwing net, diving out in the ocean, and — like many here — he was part of the ocean and the love for the island was so deeply instilled within his heart and spirit.
Myles has been a dedicated lifeguard for 28 years. His life revolves around his job and the beach he served. Poi‘pu Beach is his love and is so much a part of him.
I am saddened by the events that has led him to have to stand for a principle, which prevents his from not doing what he loves, being a lifeguard and caring for those at Poi‘pu Beach.
If it takes one person to lead others to build a village than this is what he has to do in this situation.
He tried to resolve the problems before it escalated to this level, but to no avail.
His mission is for others to benefit in the future on this island in which this situation affects all of us in some way.
Thank you for your time and I pray that all will work out for the good of the people on Kaua‘i.

Ritte for OHA
Walter Ritte is running for an at large seat in OHA. I’ve known Walter since childhood and have admired his character, understanding and knowledge of the treasures that life brings.
Walter is courageous in his beliefs, and one who is committed toward protecting our rights as stewards of this ‘aina, Hawai‘i.
He leads by trusting his heart in paving the way for enriching our cultural and spiritual heritage.
When he speaks out, he aims for our rights, and, we must listen.
You may know that Walter occupied Kaho‘olawe to protest the bombings, which stopped, and Kaho‘olawe now belongs to us.
He rejuvenated the Makahiki, which has now become a popular sport throughout the islands.
He fueled interest in upgrading our fish ponds; he protects our water rights, promotes and teaches our youth the importance of cultivating taro and stopped state officials from propagating taro as a GMO.
Walter is now active in ending the indiscriminate use of plant chemicals that pollute the environment we live in.
Please vote for Walter as an at large OHA candidate.

Bicycle lanes need to be thought out
What’s up with a bicycle lane on the newly widen portion of Kaumuali‘i Highway?
When traveling east to Lihu‘e town on the newly widened Kaumuali‘i Highway, if one decided to go to Costco to turn right onto Noho Road, they will find that they’d have to cross a bicycle lane before getting into the right turning lane.
Isn’t the bicycle lane in the wrong place of the highway?
With the bicycle lane between switching lanes, there is a fatal accident for the cyclist and/or a driver waiting to happen in that area (from Noho Road to Nawiliwili Road) off of Kaumuali‘i Highway.
The cyclist should be on the right eastbound lane when at these intersections (Noho, etc.) traveling with the flow of traffic.
Let’s remove those bicycle lanes that pose a danger.

Thank you Coast Guards
On behalf the Kaua‘i Sea Scout Ship Decisive officers and crew, please allow me to express our most sincere gratitude to the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard Station Kaua‘i in Nawiliwili harbor.
Members of Coast Guard Station Kaua‘i routinely volunteer on their days off to help us with training, operations and even boat maintenance.
Additionally, whenever we get underway, the Coast Guard tracks where we are and what we are doing as a preventative safety measure.
Needless to say, this gives great peace of mind to our officers, crew and our parents.
In summary, Kaua‘i Sea Scouts and the rest of Kaua‘i enjoy a safe boating experience due to the efforts of the men and women of Coast Guard Station Kaua‘i.
Thank you Coast Guard!

Independent thinkers question Obama
As an independent thinker, I, like Christine Queen of Kapa‘a (Sept. 27 TGI Forum) saw the documentary “Obama: 2016.” I found it thought-provoking; however, unlike Christine I am not interested in seeing 10 years of Mitt Romney’s tax documents.
I feel certain that the IRS (who works for us) has examined all of Romney’s filed taxes.
My curiosity is peaked in learning why Barack Obama paid large legal fees to have his education, health, travel, etc. records sealed.
My inquisitiveness begs to learn what our president has to hide from the American Electorate.
What does Obama’s sealed records contain that our president who is seeking re-election feels is so damning to him that he had them all sealed?
Thus, when it comes to seeing Obama’s sealed records vs. Romney’s 10-year tax docs, it’s a no contest!
Independent thinkers shall always opt to see, to learn why Obama, who presently affects our lives by what he does and says and who may continue to affect us if he is re-elected, is hiding from all of us!

Repeal PLDC
We have another Linda Lingle.
His name is Neil Abercrombie. Who are the idiots in our State Senate and House of Representatives that voted in favor of the Public Land Development Corporation?
Please repeal this insane law immediately.
Thank you.
