LIHU‘E — Brandon Chun of Kaua‘i High School posted the best boys’ score of the day at 242 (88-79-75) points and helped lead the Red Raiders to a sweep over Island School Wednesday during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation air riflery matches at the Kaua‘i High School and Hanapepe Armory ranges.
The Kaua‘i boys posted an aggregate 1,150 points over Island School boys’ 1,083 points while at the Hanapepe Armory, the Waimea boys posted a 1,096 point advantage over Kapa‘a High School boys’ 638 points, the Warriors fielding just four boys for the match.
Kristyn Yamamotoya of Kaua‘i posted the best girls’ score of the day at 236 (91-76-69) points to lead the Red Raider wahine to a team total of 1,096 points over Island Schools’ 744 points.
Jessica Tangalin of the Menehune wahine posted a 234, tying with Kaua‘i’s Sara Koide and the second-best score of the day, to lead Waimea girls to its best team score of the day at 1,118 points to get past Kapa‘a’s 1,019-point team total, the Warriors getting its lead from Kichelle Momohara’s 230 (91-67-72) points, tying Waimea’s Melia Takakusagi and Yamamotoya at 91 (out of a possible 100) points in the prone position.
“Kaua‘i High was overall the better boys team with more consistent scores all around the mid-200s,” said Island School Coach Sean Magoun in an email. “I am proud to say that some Island School individuals achieved personal records despite the loss. The Voyager girls team also continue to improve and posted its best team score, yet.”
Boys scoring
Chad Andrade topped the Voyager boys with a 232 (80-85-67) and Micah Kimi topped at 219 (88-60-71). Other Voyagers contributing to the team scoring included Marcus Punua (87-74-63-224), Davis Huffman (74-66-67-207) and Cole Moore (69-67-65-201).
Individualist Voyager men taking the range included Damien Lynch (70-57-59-186), David Caminos (69-72-53-194) and Cy Whitlock (71-53-57-181).
Following Chun for Kaua‘i, Richard Garcia (80-71-78-229), Matthew Kawamura (82-77-69-228), Alec Greer (86-85-55-226) and Hikari Oberman (86-74-65-225) contributed to the Raider boys’ aggregate scoring.
Individualist Raider men on the range included Colby Ihara-Takase (86-57-78-221), Brandon Iida (83-65-54-202) and Ryker Amimoto (86-69-56-211).
Kristopher Toma of Waimea, posting the best kneeling position score of the day at 88, topped the Menehune team scoring with 237 (88-61-88) followed by Jaron Parongao (88-63-85-236), Anthony Daligcon (84-56-78-218), Weston Souza (89-52-68-209) and Sean Dela Cruz (89-37-70-196).
Menehune individualists on the range included Devon Hartsell (84-37-69-190), Vhincel Perpose (70-31-61-162) and Ky Tomimoto (64-9-60-133).
Kapa‘a’s marksmen for the boys included Kalani Murakami (85-46-64-195), Justin Pasadava (69-40-65-174), Kenneth Firestone (74-34-65-173) and Ka‘ana Aki (47-19-30-96).
Girls scoring
The Voyager wahine, including four freshmen marksmen, were led by Alex Orbert at 176 (82-34-60) followed by Jordan Macklin (46-38-76-160), Jessica Raitz (70-41-40-151), Laura Macklin (58-51-35-144) and Bell Ynojosa (54-11-48-113).
Following Yamamotoya for the Kaua‘i girls, Sara Koide (83-86-65f-234), Brooke Hornos (80-73-59-212), Jamie McDermott (85-68-58-211) and Meghan Leary (76-70-57-203) contributed to the team scoring.
Other Red Raider girls on the line included Emma Leary (77-61-54-192), Joelle Patricio (60-62-57-179) and Leilani Pascol (70-69-55-194).
Jessica Tangalin (87-62-85-234) led the Waimea girls’ team scoring followed by Courtney Guirao (90-70-69-229), Melia Takakusagi (91-60-78-229), posting the day’s best prone position score at 91, Nikki Acoba (82-65-71-218) and Mariah Paiste (84-49-75).
Ederlinda Aguinaldo (41-41-42-124), Quianna Duarte (78-59-81-218), Krisha Esposo (75-41-73-189), Kayla Ishida (88-42-73-203) and Jackie Taylor (85-49-70-204) were individualist Menehune wahine on the range.
Kichelle Momohara topped the Warrior wahine team scoring at 230 (91-67-72), including tying Takakusagi for top score in the prone position, followed by Breannah Kaleiohi (72-67-72-211), Annie Ballesteros (71-55-70-196), Bianca Verasammy (88-49-55-192) and Shayanne Almarza (84-48-58-190).
Markea Johnson (86-50-48-184) was the sole Kapa‘a individualist for the girls.
The next round of KIF air riflery takes place Wednesday when Kaua‘i High School travels to the Hanapepe Armory, hosted by Waimea High School and Kapa‘a travels to the Island School range. Both matches get underway at 3 p.m.
