LIHU‘E – Kapa‘a Seventh Day Adventist Church is offering a vegetarian cooking class.
The free event runs from 10 a.m. to noon every Sunday from Sept. 2 to Sept. 30.
“We see many people who have access to great healthy local food but they don’t know what to do with it, so we want to teach them,” event organizer Patricia Antoine said.
The goal, according to Antoine, is to show the community how to best utilize the locally grown foods and turn them into healthy balanced concoctions that are healthier and thus help prevent diseases.
Antoine’s husband, Carlisle Antoine, is a naturopath. Naturopathic medicine is an alternative medicine geared toward a holistic approach with non-invasive treatment by encouraging minimal use of surgery and drugs.
“We grow our own food. It’s chemical-free,” he said. “The food from Mainland is always picked too early to be healthy.”
After the duo saw a need, they reached out to the community and got a very positive return.
“We are working together to help the community understand that vegetarian foods are delicious and can be balanced once done the right way,” she said.
The couple has been cooking for more than 25 years and have experimented with different foods and have come up with recipes that are wholesome and healthy.
“Our cooking class is an interactive cooking class where people will have hands on training,” Antoine said.
“There will be a mixture of raw and cooked foods, desserts and more.”
The duo has successfully taught vegetarian cooking classes in Nevada, California, Texas and Honolulu prior to moving to Kaua‘i.
The vegetarian cooking classes will be held in the Fellowship Hall on Sundays from 10 a.m. to noon September 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30.
