KEALIA — John Tyler and Kalani Vierra of the Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association will lead two workshops on Kaua‘i Beach Guardians Surf Rescues and cardio pulmonary resuscitation, starting Saturday at the north end of Kealia Beach from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Another workshop will be held Aug. 18, at the Hanalei Pavilion from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The workshops are open to all members of the swimming public at no cost. However, donations will be accepted to offset KLA expenses.
Participants are requested to bring swimsuits, sunblock, hats, towel and if available, fins, surfboard and “your Aloha attitude.”
During the workshops, the water safety officers will instruct participants on how to spot rip currents and what to do if caught in one. The flier advertising the workshop claims 75 percent of island drownings are due to people caught in rip currents.
The lifeguards will also instruct participants in basic surf rescues using rescue tubes from the rescue tube stations erected at beaches around the island by the Rotary clubs on the island.
Participants will also learn CPR and first-aid training.
The instructors hope that in knowing what to do, participants will one day be citizen lifesavers.
