LIHU‘E — In shifting to an impact-based approach to forecasting and striving toward the United States becoming a weather-ready nation, the National Weather Service is partnering with many organizations, public and private, that are concerned with weather safety, states a county press release.
Several organizations in this partnership will present two sessions of a hazard preparedness workshop for the public including the NWS, the Kaua’i Civil Defense Agency, the state Civil Defense, the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program and Simpson Strong Tie on June 30.
The workshop will be held at the Kaua‘i Veteran’s Center from 9 to 10:15 a.m. and will be repeated 10:30 to 11:45 a.m.
Among the topics that will be covered are hurricane science and prediction for 2012, home strengthening and personal preparedness.
“With the advancements made in science and technology, our efforts toward weather-readiness has certainly increased, but there’s still a lot more work to be done in terms of strengthening personal preparedness and resilience,” KCDA Manager Theodore Daligdig said in the release. “I encourage residents to attend this workshop and learn how to minimize their risks before disaster strikes.”
The 20th anniversary of Hurricane Iniki underscores the importance of being prepared, he said.
Workshop attendees will receive a free copy of the Homeowners’ Handbook to Prepare for Natural Hazards, which offers an overview of natural hazards as well as detailed information on how to protect your home and family.
