Waimea’s Lani-Rae Green, fifth seed in the Carlsmith Ball Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state tennis championships, upset No. 4 seed Bobbi Oshiro of ‘Iolani to face top-seeded Sarah Dvorak Friday at the Central O‘ahu Regional Park.
Green, the only seeded player from the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation, opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alicia Ballesteros, Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lauren Mabuni, facing Oshiro who was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Alina Katase of Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy in the Round of 16.
Green, finishing the KIF as the No. 1 Girls Singles, defeated Oshiro, 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the semifinals, eventually dropping to the top seeded Sarah Dvorak, 0-6, 1-6. With the loss, Green faced No. 7 seed Cori Cummings for third place in the Girls Singles Saturday morning, finishing in third following a 6-2, 6-3 win over Cummings.
Dvorak, the top seed in the Girls Singles, was upset by Alyssa Tobita, 4-6, 5-7 for the state Girls Singles title Saturday morning.
Green’s teammate Brittney Barreira, finishing as the KIF No. 2 Girls Singles, dropped her opening match, Thursday to Alexis Agustin, 4-6, 1-6.
Ryan Perez of Island School, the KIF No. 1 Boys Singles, also dropped his opening match to No. 5 seed Spencer Travalino, 0-6, 0-6, Thursday.
KIF No. 2 Boys Singles Christopher Ajimura of Waimea also fell to Mitchell Miyashiro, Thursday, 1-6, 1-6.
Kaua‘i’s Jennifer Grady and Shay Orial, the KIF No. 1 Girls Doubles team, opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over the duo of Leisha Ishikawa and Shayla Kushi, Thursday before falling to the No. 3 seeded pair of Kristen Poei and Sari Kwee of ‘Iolani, 0-6, 1-6.
The Waimea duo of Rachel Umetsu and Annalissa Hartsell, finishing as the KIF No. 2 Girls Doubles team, dropped its opening match to Katie Yamamoto and Shannon Yamamoto of Punahou, 3-6, 0-6.
Kaua‘i’s Jerik Centeno and Matthew Kanna, the KIF No. 1 Boys Doubles team opened with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Kona’s Finn Gallagher and Caelen McHale before dropping to the No. 3 seeded pair of Chandler Daub and Jeffrey Gelman, 1-6, 1-6.
The KIF No. 2 Boys Doubles team of Radcliff Floria and Kevin Jian, both of Kaua‘i, dropped its opening match, 1-6, 0-6 to Ty Tanaka and Calvin Lee.
