JJ’s Broiler — Kaua‘i’s original steakhouse in Nawiliwili —offers live music from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. This is fulfilling a need on the island to offer a venue for the abundance of local talent.
Jimmy Jasper, whose family has been in the restaurant business for 43 years here on Kaua‘i, says that pre Iniki, Kaua‘i was rocking and rolling.
Today, he’s eager to provide the venue for dancing, dining, great food, great views and great entertainment.
From JJ’s oceanside perch, it is fantastic to watch the paddlers go by, to hear the waves, and feel the fresh ocean air as huge hot plates of food with enticing aromas are delivered to dining patrons.
JJ’s also offers daily drink specials from 4 to 5 p.m. During Happy Hour, a Kalapaki Breeze made with coconut rum, pineapple juice and cranberry juice can be had for $3.
Wednesday nights, Sean Carillo plays and sings not just covers, but some of his own compositions and many Hawaiian standards.
Sean was born on Maui, arrived on Kaua‘i at age 7 and grew up here before later living on O‘ahu for a while.
He played at JJ’s back in the 1990s and has returned for Wednesday night gigs.
He also plays at Dukes, Trees and Sushi Bushido.
Sean is self- taught on guitar, as are many of the local entertainers.
They tell stories about watching and listening and learning the old way. Sean picked up the guitar in 1984 and likes to add new twists to every show.
The lineup at JJ’s includes Kyle LaBenz on Mondays. Tuesdays feature Clyde Letreta, and Sean Carillo plays Wednesdays.
On Thursday, it’s Sean “Seanie Boy” Pulawa and “Kukana Aloha.”
Friday features Lefty Bob, who plays the guitar left-handed and upside down.
All the entertainers in the lineup are long-time friends of Jimmy Jasper, JJ’s owner.
JJ’s is located in a corner of the Anchor Cove Shopping Center at 3416 Rice St. Or call 246-4422.
