Applications for the Hawai‘i High School Hall of Honor are currently being accepted with a deadline of April 25, said William Arakaki, the Kaua‘i representative to the Hall of Honor selection committee.
Application forms are available at the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association website at www.sportshigh.com and need to be accompanied by a senior portrait, an action photograph and up to six pages of supporting material, anything beyond six pages being discarded without discretion. The HHSAA website notes only official HHSAA Hall of Honor nomination forms will be accepted and must be approved by the student-athlete’s respective school.
The completed package must be mailed to HHSAA Hall of Honor Scholarship, P.O.Box 62029, Honolulu, HI 96839 with a postmark deadline of Apr. 25.
Arakaki said one of the new facets for this year’s forms is the applicant must have the signature of their athletic director and reminds potential applicants not to overlook this on their forms.
Twelve student-athletes are selected annually for induction into the Hall of Honor by an independent selection committee. In addition to the induction into the Hall of Honor, each student-athlete will receive a $2,000 Enterprise Rent-a-Car college scholarship which may be used to offset college expenses such as tuition, books or room and board.
Any high school senior in the State of Hawai‘i who participated in any official HHSAA state championship sport is eligible for consideration.
Athletic achievement is given primary consideration by the selection committee, states the HHSAA website. Other factors considered include contributions to the team, versatility in sports, sportsmanship and dedication, character and behavior on and off the playing field or court, academic achievement, role in school activities outside sports and involvement in the community.
The selection committee is scheduled for May 19 and 20 with the honorees being announced on May 21.
An awards banquet will be held June 3 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, and honorees are required to attend the banquet.
The Recognition Dinner order form is also available on the HHSAA website.
