ANINI – Two teenagers from Lihu‘e and a Hanama‘ulu man were rescued in waters off Anini Beach at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, the Kaua‘i Fire Department reported.
Rescuers report that two 14-year-old females were stand-up paddling and got caught in the current, unable to paddle back to shore. Their uncle paddled out on a body board to try and help the girls, but also got caught in the strong current, the fire department states in a news release.
Firefighters were on scene within 10 minutes and located the three individuals on the far side of the channel. Two firefighters on rescue paddle boards and two lifeguards on a Jet Ski were able to assist all three safely back to shore, the department reported.
No injuries were reported.
Ocean Safety Bureau officials report that Anini Beach is known for its strong currents. The water was especially rough Saturday with waves of up to 20 feet outside of the reef.
