LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Ballers, Team Lihu‘e and Kaulupono were tops in the county’s Youth Winter Basketball League for students in Grades 6 through 8.

The Kaua‘i Ballers, headed by coach William Aki for the girls and coach Kekoa Colipano, a former Kapa‘a High School basketball standout, were named to both the Boys and Girls divisions, states the county’s release.

Colipano led the Kaua‘i Ballers boys team to earn the Participation and Outstanding Team awards while Aki, juggling between duties with the Kapa‘a High School girls program and the county’s youth program, was named to the Sportsmanship award for the Girls division.

Kaulupono, led by coach Bobby Kamakele, captured both the Participation and Outstanding Team awards for the Girls division.

Coach Peter Rayno, a longtime community basketball coach as well as a veteran Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation basketball official, led Team Lihu‘e to the Sportsmanship award for the Boys division.

The county’s youth basketball league for students in Grades 6 through 8 played through the holiday season, sponsored by the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation with officials from the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association assisting with the field officials and scorers’ table.

The same alliance is currently in the midst of its Division II youth games for students in Grades 4 through 6 with nine teams in the Boys division and four teams in the Girls division.
