Construction crews continued work Tuesday clearing fallen trees and repairing North Shore roads and parts of Kuhio Highway.
Tree-cutting was under way near Kalihiwai Bridge, and motorists were told to expect delays.
On Tuesday, only local traffic was allowed access on Kuhio Highway near Ha‘ena Beach Park. State Department of Transportation contractors were still doing emergency work there following the recent heavy rains and flooding, according to Bow Contracting Management Service, which was contracted by the state Department of Transportation to manage most road projects on the North Shore.
Crews were cutting trees and removing boulders threatening to fall from above Ha‘ena’s Dry Cave onto the highway. Local traffic was allowed through, but was subject to delays. Work may continue through today, Bow officials said Tuesday.
Bow officials urged drivers to avoid locations where construction is taking place, for safety and to help crews expedite repairs.
Bow is also asking drivers to avoid the following spots as much as possible until emergency road repairs are complete: Kuhio Highway from Princeville to the Hanalei Bridge and on Kuhio Highway in Kilauea. In Kilauea, traffic was being routed onto Kolo Road while crews continue repairs on a damaged culvert.
Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, closed by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Friday morning after storm-related trail damages, remains closed to the public until further notice.
Ha‘ena State Park has been closed since Sunday, following a landslide at nearby Ha‘ena Beach Park, which closed the road to the state park.
Originally slated to begin Thursday, the Hanalei transfer station driveway project has been rescheduled to April 5 due to the recent storms, the Kaua‘i County Department of Public Works announced. Green waste drop-off service will be suspended for the duration of the driveway project expected to be under way from April to April 14.
Green waste is not being accepted at the Hanalei and Lihu‘e transfer stations due to safety concerns caused by muddy conditions at the drop-off sites. Residents can drop off green waste at the Kapa‘a and Hanapepe transfer stations or the Kekaha Landfill.
