WAIPOULI — Hundreds of people poured through the entrance of the Courtyard by Marriott at Coconut Beach to “Eat Dessert First” Tuesday night.
The event was a fundraiser for the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i Foundation for its scholarship program, which last year provided $12,000 in scholarships to high school seniors and a Kaua‘i Community College student.
During the event, which coincided with the resort’s special Valentine’s Day buffet, guests browsed through hundreds of items in the silent auction. Special prize drawings included several hotel stay packages.
“We’re at 100 percent and with the special buffet, this is going to be a busy night,” said Barbara Gusman, sales manager for the Courtyard.
“We knew this was going to be busy,” said Katie Beer, the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i event chairperson. “Last year we had it the Friday before Valentine’s Day, as it has been tradition, but we heard suggestions from patrons that they wanted something to do on Valentine’s Day. This year, it’s on Valentine’s Day and there are families and a lot of people.”
Zonta Club ticket sellers at the front of the resort said sales were so brisk they lost track of how many sales had taken place.
Tommy and Malia Tokioka provided the entertainment for the evening, punctuating the musical offerings with hula from Veronica Pablo, a former Miss Kaua‘i Filipina.
