HANAPEPE — Jacob Lewis netted two goals to lead the Kaua‘i High School Junior Varsity boys to an 8-0 shutout over Waimea, Thursday at the Hanapepe Stadium.
Playing in an almost constant rain, the JV Raiders balanced its scoring, netting four goals in each half and coach Kevin Celebrado mixing his field, moving defenders to mid and forward positions while mixing his forwards to defense.
Following Lewis’ pair of goals, Kaua‘i also got goals from Justin “Scrappy” Garma who anchored the midfield during the opening half, Jared Okayama, Kaiea Iwasaki, Kalen Celebrado, Herschel Ah Puck and Marcus Brown capping the win with a late-game goal.
Iwasaki quickly opened the scorebooks, finding the net in the first minute of play.
Five minutes later, Garma got help from the wing to score in the fifth minute and Ah Puck getting his goal at the 22nd minute.
With less than 10 minutes peeled off the clock in the second half, Okayama found the net in the 44th minute followed by Lewis getting his first goal at the 56th minute, Brown coming up the middle for his score in the 61st minute and Lewis capping the victory in the 64th minute.
Okayama and Iwasaki are normal starting defenders, but as the game progressed, were given turns in the midfield and forward positions.
Brown, normally working the middle, capped the game late in the second half with a goal which met with approval from the stalwart fans who braved the wind and rain at Hanapepe.
Waimea next travels to Vidinha Stadium, Saturday to meet the Kapa‘a Warriors for the final time this season.
Due to testing and the play-in game for the girls to the Outrigger Hotels and Resort Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state soccer championships for Div. I and Div. II, the start time for the Junior Varsity boys will be at 12:15 p.m., according to Kapa‘a coach Kevin Cram in an email.
The varsity boys will kick off at 2 p.m. followed by the girls play-in game starting at 4 p.m.
