Flora Nunes Cortez of Lihu‘e died at home on Dec. 30, 2011, at the age of 78. Born in South Kona, Hawai‘i, on Sept. 26, 1933, she retired as a waitress from Tip Top Café.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Hadir Cortez, and daughter, Florenda Jean Cortez.
She is survived by her son, Dennis Cortez; her daughter, Peggy Salba-Honnet; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Aloha Church with visitation at 10 a.m. and services celebrated at 10:30 a.m. .
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the Cortez family with arrangements.
Joey Swanson
Joey Jerry “Indian Joe” Swanson, formally of Kaua‘i, died on Dec. 17, 2011, at his home in Honolulu. He was born on Dec. 6, 1955, on the Navajo Indian Reservation at Seba Delkai, Ariz. He was 56 years old.
He moved to Kaua‘i in 1972 with his parents, George and Donna Schulze, and family. He graduated from Kaua‘i High School in 1974 and was formerly employed at the Coco Palms Hotel, Kaua‘i Surf and Kaua‘i Resort. For the past nine years, he was employed at the Pioneer Plaza Resort on O‘ahu. He loved surfing Kaua‘i and O‘ahu and enjoyed working in the visitor industry.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Schulze of Kilauea; his sister, Melodye Dabney; and his brother-in-law, Karl, of Oregon.
He is survived by his mother, Donna Schulze of Kilauea; daughter, Jessica Julia Swanson of Kalaheo; three grandchildren, Melisa, Jolene and Elijah; sisters, Gay Holden-Petrini (Glenn) of Florida; Cathy Casas of South Carolina and Honey Charles (“BC”) of Hanamaulu; brothers, Happy Holden (Lydia) of Michigan; Dr. Jolly Holden (Lynda) of Georgia; numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews.
John Cummings
John Humphries Cummings Sr. of Anahola died on Jan. 6, 2012, at Garden Isle Health Care at the age of 73. He was born on Jan. 2, 1939, in Hanamaulu, Kaua‘i, and retired as a tractor operator after 39 years with Lihu‘e Sugar Plantation.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Humphries Frank Cummings and Theresa Perreira Cummings Kido; step-father, Kaigo Kido; brother, Gary Cummings; brother-in-law, Earl Apo; son-in-law, Vince “Kutie” Efhan and grandson, Byron Cummings.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Barbara Jean Keawe Cummings; five sons, John Cummings Jr., Alroy Cummings, George (Arnell) Cummings, Billy (Tessy) Cummings, Dennis (Lynn) Cummings; two daughters, Holiday Efhan and Michele (Ken) Nakamura; brothers, Kenneth (Charlene) Cummings, Wilbert Cummings; sister, Agnes Apo; sister-in-law, Ruby Cummings; 25 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, Jan. 20, at Kapa‘a Assembly of God Church with viewing at 8 a.m. and services celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens. Please join the Cummings ‘ohana for a luncheon at the Wailua Houselots Park immediately following burial.
