Sam Jin Arashiro
Sam Jin Arashiro of Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i, died on Dec. 17, 2011, in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 56. He was born on April 4, 1955, in Waimea. He recently retired from the Department of Parks and Recreation where he was a recreation coordinator for the County of Kaua‘i.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Arashiro; mother, Gladys Arashiro and brother, Kurt Arashiro.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Arashiro; daughters, Cody, Cory and Casey Arashiro and siblings, April, Darlene and Craig Arashiro.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life service on Jan. 16 at Wailua Marina Restaurant on Kaua‘i. Visitation at 4 p.m. Services will follow at 5 p.m. The family requests that flowers be omitted.
Zachary Caberto
Zachary Keahi Kamoi Caberto of Kapahi passed away on Dec. 31, 2011, at Samuel Mahelona Hospital at the age of 23. He was born on Dec. 24, 1988, in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i. He was a tile setter for Flooring Innovations.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, Juan “Carlos” Caberto; Gregoria “Gloria” Caberto and Harbor Lampl.
He is survived by father, Leroy Caberto of Kapahi; mother, Mary Lampl Kaneakua of O‘ahu; sisters, Caitlin (Kevin) Caberto of Kalihiwai; Kyra (Skyler) Caberto of Kalaheo; Alex, Jade, Saphire and Rachel all of O‘ahu; brother, Kai Kaneakua of O‘ahu ; grandmother, Dorothy Lampl of New Mexico; girlfriend, Tisha Learned of Wainiha; uncles, John (Sue) Caberto, Ronald (Loreen) Caberto; Anthony Caberto; Karl (Kaly) Holly Caberto and Jerry Caberto; cousins, Maile, Arthur (Shelsie); Leon, Dera (Kaipo); Talia (Clay), Shanoa (John); Brandi (Brandon); Ian; Travis (Kanani); Kaisha, Kaia, Kaikona, Dustin, Kieran, Trysten, Isaiah, Baylie, Leijah, Meleana, Rush, Zaijah, Jordyn, Tia, Star, Lily Elijah and Kendra.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, Jan. 12, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Kapaia. Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Officiating by Father Anthony Rapozo. Scattering of ashes to follow at Kealia Bay. The family requests casual attire. Flowers accepted to be cut and loose.

Mary K. Wong of Anahola died on Dec. 22, 2011, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 40. She was born in Honolulu, O‘ahu on Sept. 16, 1971.
She is survived by her mother, Everhart Purdy, step-father, Harry K. Purdy Jr., sisters, Celes, Philadelphia, Shiy-Ann, half-sisters, Eve and Rebecca; brothers, Phil, John, Jake, numerous nieces, nephews, one uncle, Delhart (Daisy) Numazu and cousins.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Anahola Beach Park with services beginning at 10 a.m.

Nepumuceno “Sinog” “Nepu” Pascual Kabigting of Hanama‘ulu died on Jan. 4, 2012, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 69. He was born in Laoag city, Ilocos Norte, Philippines on May 15, 1942, and was employed by Garden Island Shrub & Turf Care as a landscaper.
He is survived by his wife, Martina Kabigting; daughter, Marie Vic Cabigting (Rustico Damaso); and two grandsons, Eric Rabot and Jordan Rabot, all of Hanama‘ulu.
A celebration of his life will be held on Jan. 21 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Kapa‘a with viewing from 9 a.m. and services celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at All Saints Church.

Emily Ponce
Emily Ponce of Honolulu, Hawai‘i, passed away on January 1, 2012 at Kaua‘i Care Center at the age of 83. She was born on April 9, 1928, in Honolulu, O‘ahu. She was a waitress at Georges Inn.
She was preceded in death by parents, Ramon & Eusebia Munos; husbands, Earl Newcomb & Nick Ponce.
She is survived by sons, Joseph (Gloria) Munos of Waianae, O‘ahu; Earl (Carrie) Newcomb of Waimea, Kauai; daughters, Juanita (Frank) Sierra of Gresham, Oregon, Anna (Elwood) Machado of Waimea, Kauai; brother, Manuel Munos of Kapahulu, O‘ahu; sister, Carnation Navarro of Fairfield, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be private.

Joey Swanson
Joey Jerry “Indian Joe” Swanson, formally of Kaua‘i, died on Dec. 17, 2011, at his home in Honolulu. He was born on Dec. 6, 1955, on the Navajo Indian Reservation at Seba Delkai, Ariz., he was 56 years old.
He moved to Kaua‘i in 1972 with his parents George and Donna Schulze and family. He graduated from Kaua‘i High School in 1974 and was formerly employed at the Coco Palms Hotel, Kaua‘i Surf and Kaua‘i Resort. For the past nine years he was employed at the Pioneer Plaza Resort on Oæahu. He loved surfing Kaua‘i and O‘ahu and enjoyed working in the visitor industry.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Schulze of Kilauea; his sister, Melodye Dabney and brother-in-law, Karl of Oregon.
He is survived by his mother, Donna Schulze of Kilauea; daughter, Jessica Julia Swanson of Kalaheo; three grandchildren, Melisa, Jolene and Elijah; sisters, Gay Holden-Petrini (Glenn) of Florida; Cathy Casas of South Carolina and Honey Charles (“BC”) of Hanama‘ulu; brothers, Happy Holden (Lydia) of Michigan; Dr. Holly Holden (Lynda) of Georgia; numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews.
Private family services will be held at a later date. The family requests that donations be made to local charities in his honor.
William Dahle
William “Bill” Dahle of Kalaheo, Kaua‘i, died Jan. 7, 2012, at his residence at the age of 69. He was born on March 23, 1942, in Duluth, Minnesota. He was a radio personality and part owner of KUAI Radio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Catherine Dahle; brother, Thomas Dahle and brother-in-law, Wayne Carveiro.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn L. Carveiro; daughter, Robyn “Malu” Dahle of Kaua‘i; one granddaughter; father-in-law, Charles Carveiro Sr.; mother-in-law, Claire Carveiro; sisters-in-law, Yvonne Dahle of California and Grace Carveiro of Kapa‘a; and brother-in-law, Charles Carveiro Jr. (Sheri) of Kaua‘i;
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Garden Island Mortuary chapel. S ervice officiated by Father Ben of All Saints Church will begin at 11 a.m. A private interment will be held at a later date. Casual attire is suggested and flowers omitted.

Flora Cortez
Flora Nunes Cortez of Lihu‘e died at home on Dec. 30, 2011, at the age of 78. Born in South Kona, Hawai‘i on Sept. 26, 1933, she retired as a waitress from Tip Top Café.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Hadir Cortez, and daughter, Florenda Jean Cortez.
She is survived by her son, Dennis Cortez; her daughter, Peggy Salba-Honnet; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Aloha Church with visitation at 10 a.m. and services celebrated at 10:30 a.m. .
