With a claim like “best buns on the island,” Kaua‘i Bakery & Cinnamon has a big order to fill. Lucky for those that have a sweet tooth, they have the awards to back it up. The Eastside bakery took home first place for three Best of Kaua‘i 2011 awards, including honors for best bakery, malasadas and dessert.
“We have a variety of pastries,” said Silas Tacsiat, whose father, Roland, owns the bakery. “We have Filipino pastries, Portuguese pastries and other local stuff, which appeals to a lot of people in the community.”
The family-owned bakery makes trays of suman cassava (a sweet Filipino rice cake wrapped in banana leaves), pastele manapua (a Puerto Rican favorite that features a bun filled with savory pork, olives and gandule rice), pandesal (a fresh-from-the-oven dinner roll) and ensaymada (a buttery sweet bread).
The bakery’s best-selling item is its malasadas (50 cents each or $5.89 for a dozen). The Eastside eatery sells between 60 to 100 malasadas a day. During Malasada Tuesday (aka Fat Tuesday), those numbers triple.
“On most days, we sell out before 3 p.m.,” Silas said.
Other bestsellers include the apple turnovers ($1.79 each) and cinnamon rolls ($1.99 each).
Silas’s personal favorite is a flying saucer.
“It’s like a Sloppy Joe,” Silas said. “It’s hamburger meat and cheese in a pastry.”
Roland begins his day at 11 p.m., making fresh dough as the base for his delectable pastries and desserts.
Roland bought the bakery three years ago, and his business outgrew its old location, forcing a move to a larger space by Verizon Wireless at Kukui Grove Cinemas.
Kaua‘i Bakery & Cinnamon’s delectables can be found at its main location or at 7-Eleven and Seoka Store in Koloa.
The bakery doesn’t let its pastries go to waste.
“Whatever food we have left over, we donate to the (Kaua‘i Independent) Food Bank,” Silas said.
In addition to buttery pastries, Kaua‘i Bakery & Cinnamon also whips up cakes (the guava chiffon is a favorite), pies and brownies.
Kaua‘i Bakery & Cinnamon is open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday; 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; and 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
