LIHU‘E — The state Department of Land and Natural Resources on Friday officially announced the cancellation of second- and third-tier public auctions for cabins at Koke‘e and Waimea Canyon state parks.
Following the auction’s first tier last month when all 16 cabins received successful bids, DLNR had announced if each bidder fulfilled their post-auction responsibilities, subsequent tiers which would have opened the auction to bidders from off-island would not be necessary.
“We are pleased to report that all leases were sold successfully at the first tier of the auction held Dec. 8 in Lihu‘e and, as a result, no other lots are available,” DLNR Chair William Aila Jr. said in a press release. “The revenue from the sale of these leases will be used by DLNR to offset a reduction in funds critical for the operational needs for the Division of State Parks.”
The winning bidders of the 20-year leases at the Dec. 8 first-tier auction represent a broad cross-section of the Kaua‘i community, according to DLNR.
The auction’s first tier was open only to residents of a county which has less than 100,000 residents. Such stipulation limited the first tier to Kaua‘i residents only. A second tier would have opened up the auction to statewide residents, and the third tier would have opened the auction to bids from outside of Hawai‘i.
The next tier was scheduled for Jan. 13.
Per lease terms, lessees can use the recreation-residence cabins for no more than 90 consecutive days and no more than 180 days per year.
