LIHU‘E — A new baby for Dr. New Sang also became Kaua‘i’s first baby of 2012 on Sunday at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
“The doctors were kidding him about it, creating their own headlines about a new baby for New,” a nurse from the hospital’s maternity department said after presenting mother Joanne Lai with presents from the Wilcox Hospital Foundation.
Janessa Lai Sang entered the world at 10:59 a.m., beating out another baby who was born just 30 minutes later, the nurse said.
“We came earlier, but the doctor said we could go home,” Lai said. “But we played it safe and spent the night.”
Lai and Sang, a pediatrician, are from Kalaheo. Janessa is their third child.
“Joanna just got her master’s degree in psychology,” Sang said between catnaps on the lounger in Lai’s suite. “This is so she can understand the child better.”
Janessa weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces, and measured 20.25 inches when she became the island’s New Year’s baby.
