LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i’s Bristy Agu fired off eight points to lead the Red Raider wahine to a 38-22 win over Seabury Hall of Maui, Wednesday at the Kaua‘i High School gym.
Agu received balanced offense from the Red Raiders as Jennifer Grady and Kristle Henry both added seven points in the match against the Maui Interscholastic League Division II team.
Ross Shimabukuro, athletic director for Kaua‘i High School, said he believed this is an add-on to the basketball tournament being hosted by the Kapa‘a High School basketball program, the girls’ team being able to play both Waimea and Kapa‘a high schools over the next few days.
The Kaua‘i girls, coached by Sandi Nadatani-Mendez, comes off a strong 45-29 win over Waimea, Tuesday night, the starters for Kaua‘i showing little signs of that game.
Ben Agu, whose daughter Bristy finished with high-point honors for Kaua‘i, had his Junior Varsity girls watching the game from the stage vantage point.
“They had a good game against Waimea last night and I told them to come and watch so they can learn,” Agu said.
Kaua‘i opened strong, Grady netting a bucket and launching a bomb from outside the three-point arc to lead the Red Raiders in its 11-6 opening frame, the Raider defense not slowing, keeping Seabury to just two points in the second quarter while Henry set the pace on the offensive side with four points to lead Kaua‘i’s 10-point performance.
Kawehi Louis-Diamond finished with six points, four coming in the final period when Nadatani had her bench gaining experience.
Dakota Grossmann topped the Seabury scoring with eight points followed by Tiana Camarillo adding six points, four coming in the opening frame. Tiare Camarillo finished with two points before leaving the game with an injury. She was joined by Anna Rodgers who bucketed her pair in the third quarter, Allie Rudow and Alyssa Bettendorf who each scored a bucket in the final frame.
According to a preliminary schedule from Philip Baclayon, the Kapa‘a boys head coach, Kapa‘a will be hosting Ka‘u and Kohala high school boys’ teams from the Big Island as well as the boys and girls teams from Seabury Hall.
The tournament runs through Friday at the Bernice Hundley Gym at the Kapa‘a High School tournament.
