LIHU‘E — Two women were sentenced Thursday for a fray that resulted over a dispute for a park pavilion last spring and ruined an evening gathering for the registered family.
Nicole K. Ariola, 24, of Hanama‘ulu, and Kasey K. N. Sasaki, 23, of Lihu‘e, were arrested March 8 for third-degree assault.
According to a description of the incident read in court, the two were part of a larger group playing “beer pong” near an outdoor pavilion being used by another party.
The two women apparently had an altercation with the person who had signed for the pavilion, after they were asked to leave the area registered for the party, according to County Deputy Prosecutor Melinda Mendes. The group moved to another spot nearby and reportedly returned later that night when a physical altercation occurred.
Ariola and Sasaki pleaded no contest to reduced harassment charges, a petty-misdemeanor on Sept. 20. They apologized for their actions, and said they would act differently if the incident were to happen again.
Fifth Circuit Chief Judge Randal Valenciano said the victim’s statements differed greatly from those of the defendants. He said there was a pattern of behavior that was consistent with past incidents, and showed that the both women did not accept full responsibility for their actions.
Valenciano denied Sasaki’s motion for deferment and sentenced her to six months of probation and two days in jail,
Ariola’s motion for deferred acceptance was granted for six months in her harassment case.
Both women were also sentenced to 50 hours of community service. They must take anger management counseling and a substance abuse evaluation.
