Kameichi Sakamoto
Kameichi Sakamoto of Lihu‘e died at home on Nov. 24, 2011, at age 85. Born in Kapa‘a on Aug. 8, 1926, he retired from the Department of Education as an agriculture teacher at Kaua‘i High School.
He is survived by his wife, Mae Sakamoto; two daughters, Stacy (Tommy) Matsuzawa of Washington, Jan Sakamoto of Colorado; three grandchildren, Michelle Matsuzawa, Joe Matsuzawa, Jade Sakamoto; sister, Matsuko Sakamoto of Kaua‘i; brother, Haruichi Sakamoto of Washington; numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at The Kapa‘a Hongwanji Mission with visitation from 9 a.m. and services celebrated at 10 a.m.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Sakamoto family with arrangements.
Toru Kawakami
Toru Kawakami of Kalaheo died on Nov. 14, 2011, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 90. He was born on Oct. 1, 1921, in Port Allen. He was a real estate broker and developer and owner of Yoneji Realty. Also together with his parents, brothers, sisters and associates, he was one of the founders of N.F. Kawakami Stores Ltd., and Big Save, Inc.
He was preceded in death by his son, John Fukuo Kawakami; his parents, Fukataro and Hisa Kawakami; his brothers, Norito Kawakami of Honolulu and Keiji Kawakami of Honolulu and sister-in-law, Mitsuko Kawakami.
He is survived by his wife, May Kawakami of Kalaheo; his grandchildren, Sonoi and Chance Kawakami; brother, Dan Kawakami (Mitsuko) of Placentia, Calif.; sisters, Yukie (Tsukasa) Murakami of Hanapepe and Mabel (Norman) Hashisaka of Kalaheo; sisters-in-law, Joan (Norito) Kawakami of Honolulu and Edith (Keiji) Kawakami of Honolulu; brother-in-law, Ben K. Tsutsumi of Santa Maria, Calif.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, at St. John’s Church in ‘Ele‘ele; service at 10 a.m. Casual attire is suggested.
Akiko Coleman
Akiko K. Coleman of Lawa‘i died on Dec.1, 2011, at her home at age 80. Born on April 17, 1931, in Nagoya, Japan, she was the owner of Hawaiian Trading Post.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ruth Ann Coleman.
She is survived by daughter, Mary “Lizzie” Coleman Cope (Don) of Po‘ipu; granddaughters, Gabriella and Brianna Cope and caregiver Launi Alo.
Friends may visit with the family at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at the Garden Island Mortuary chapel. Service will be held at 11 a.m., followed by burial at Kalapaki Bay Memorial Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
